The SNDK compact flash memory is guaranteed for something like 10 million read/write cycles. It has its own integral controller card built into the unit, so a computer sees it as just another disk drive. You can download and upload files just the way you would with a conventional disk drive when you communicate online or save and retrieve files locally. One of the intriguing aspects of its design (i.e., the design of the SanDisk units) is that the controller constantly searches for malfunctioning parts of the memory and writes only to those portions of the "disk" that are operating properly. Thus, the reliability is very high.
