One moron quoted in a news story whined that RedHat was just out to make money and didn't care about the people.

Good - companies exist to make money, not help people. That's why GNU and, I think, Debian, are non-profit charities and not corporations.

And my question remains: are there enough people who have created tools like Emacs, Lestif, and other essential parts of the Linux system that will stop supporting Red Hat if they get too big?

Does it matter if Richard Stallman tells people to avoid Red Hat?
Does it matter if Linus Torvalds tells people to avoid Red Hat?
Does it matter if Red Hat tells these people to piss off and splinters linux the way Unix got forked in the 80's?
