The wireless contract awards totaled almost $23,085,000,000, representing an increase in award value of almost 32% over 1997, according to Cahners In-Stat Group, a high-technology market research firm.
According to Cahners In-Stat Group, this accelerated wireless industry hardware growth will continue for at least the next 36-48 months as fixed wireless begins to match mobile wireless awards and 3G deployment begins. In the near term, Global Packet Radio System (GPRS) deployment is expected to help maintain the high level of activity on the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) front.
