The National Post reports in its Wednesday, June 16, edition that Cominco and
two Vancouver juniors are in serious talks to consolidate their high-grade but
technically difficult zinc-silver discoveries in Southeastern Yukon. The National
Post's John Schriener writes that one of the properties involved in the talks is the
Wolverine deposit, owned 60 per cent by Expatriate Resources and 40 per cent
by Atna Resources, which discovered it in 1995. Atna puts a value of $2-billion
on the Wolverine deposit. Cominco has a property nearby called the Kudz Ze
Kayah and an exploration property adjoining Wolverine. Atna says that combining
the discoveries in one entity would create the "economies of scale" needed to build
a mine serving all the properties. Atna has disclosed what options are on the table.
Cominco says there's been on and off discussion for some time. Cominco says
there is a possibility there may be some rationalization. However, the miner
stresses that the negotiations are at a "very, very preliminary" stage.
