I designed a data acquisition and control system for an aircraft application back in 1994. At the time I looked at flash memory (Sundisk PCMCIA cards) since the MTBF was much higher than conventional hard drives. Also, I was concerned with cabin pressures at higher altitudes. However, due to the low density (and high cost)of flash memory, I chose a sealed hard disk in a type-III PCMCIA form factor. I have purchased about 10 of these hard disks over the past 5 years. Of those 10 disks, only 5 are still functional and most of them have surface area problems that are tagged by scandisk as unusable. I'm presently upgrading the system design and take a guess what my storage media is going to be this time? That's right, 100% no moving parts solid-state flash memory! Of course, I haven't tried IBM's microdrive, but I see NO reason to believe that it wouldn't have the same type of problems that I've seen with the PCMCIA sealed hard drives in mobile applications. Just my 2 cents.
