The thing about that Exxon example is that even if you didn't have any capital gains at all, you are still getting your money back several times over.

The next time stocks trend lower or stay in a trading range for a long time, investors will begin demanding dividends, and that naturally acts as a "floor" for the companies that have a solid record of increasing their dividends year after year.

Stupendous capital gains don't happen all the time. They happen only in bull markets. And there are other kinds of markets too!
