Pentagon Unloads Armor-Piercing Sniper Bullets as 'Surplus'

<< In the Gulf War, U.S. troops armed with the .50-caliber sniping rifle were able to blast crippling holes in Iraqi tanks from more than a mile away.

Since then, a little-known U.S. Department of Defense program has made surplus .50-caliber armor-piercing ammunition available to the American public, according to a congressional report released today.

The ammunition was designed to destroy military aircraft, vehicles and bunkers, states the report, prepared by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) at the request of Reps. Rod Blagojevich, D-Ill., and Henry Waxman, D-Calif.
