A Bizarre Bid for Caesars

Thu Jun 17 1999

A bid for the purchase of the eight Caesars hotel-casinos came seemingly from out of nowhere. Ocean Fund International, the company that says it runs the world's largest Internet sex site, Sex.com, issued a statement Monday night announcing its bid of $3.6 billion in cash. However, Starwood, Inc., the current owner of Caesars, denies ever hearing of the purported bidder--so does Park Place Entertainment, the company that plans to buy the hotel-casinos later this year. Gaming industry analyst for Bears Stearns & Co., Jason Ader, comments: "We characterize that as bizarre, and we underscore the word ‘bizarre.' Our advice to investors is to dismiss this as so much noise. It's not likely to have much credibility."
