Intel / RIM honoured as the best alliance in North America

WASHINGTON, DC, June 17 /CNW/ - An innovative and successful alliance
between the world's largest chipmaker and a world leader in wireless
communications has won the 1999 Award for Canadian-American Business
Achievement.
The prestigious Award will be presented to Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:
INTC) of Chandler, Arizona and Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ: RIMM, TSE:
RIM) of Waterloo, Ontario by Canada's Ambassador to the United States, Raymond
Chrétien and Stan Krejci, president of the Canadian-American Business Council,
during a luncheon ceremony today at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
When Intel and RIM joined forces, they created the groundwork for a
breakthrough wireless device that allows mobile users to easily access their
corporate email and personal organizer wherever they go. These users also
access information on the Internet and corporate Intranets and even trade
stocks -- all from the palm of their hand. Over the past nine months, RIM's
Inter(at)ctive(TM) Pager and BlackBerry(TM) have captured broad industry
attention and received numerous awards and accolades from analysts and media
across North America.
Several years ago, RIM defined an ambitious goal of producing a new
device that required a major breakthrough in integration of computing and
wireless technologies. RIM turned to Intel, one of its key technology
suppliers, for the computing solution. Intel redesigned the Intel 386(R)
processor (previously used to power desktop PCs) into a low power
implementation that operates on a single AA battery for weeks. Intel's
embedded microprocessor and flash memory technology provided a powerful and
reliable foundation which enabled RIM to evolve the common pager into a new
standard for wireless information appliances.
As a result, Intel has been able to extend its reach into the wireless
marketplace and set new expectations for very low power Intel Architecture
processors. RIM has rapidly expanded its workforce to over 300 employees and
has expanded the applications and distribution of this product during its
first year on the market.
Each year since 1995, the Canadian-American Business Council and its
Foundation have recognized successful alliances between American and Canadian
firms whose joint business enterprise demonstrates business growth,
innovation, and community contribution. The Award's winners have included
firms offering everything from automotive parts to environmental engineering.
On this, the fifth anniversary of NAFTA, ''The Intel/RIM alliance serves as a
model for constructive international cooperation between companies of very
different sizes,'' says CABC president Stan Krejci, ''and boosts the $1.5
billion per day in trade between our two countries even further.''
