Actually, I have read that if you stick a nail into an apple, the iron will leach out into the apple, and that is a good iron supplement. I don't know about the zinc, and I'd certainly never do it, myself. If you cook in cast iron pots, that supplements your iron, too. I have read recently that iron supplements can make you more susceptible to heart attacks, unless you are menstruating or pregnant you don't need iron.
Edit: I am doing a PubMed search, it looks like male athletes may need iron supplements. Stay tuned.
Edit again: the jury is still out on whether iron supplementation can cause heart disease or cancer. One article suggested reverse causality - that iron is prescribed for deficiencies, and that the thing that caused the deficiency may be the cause of the disease. But I would guess that you, personally, don't need iron supplements, unless you are anemic. |
