Lucent, ARIS Pairing to Promote Watermarking Solutions

Two leaders in the digital watermarking field, Lucent Technologies and ARIS Technologies, have announced an agreement that will find both companies marketing and promoting each other's audio and video monitoring solutions.

Terms of the agreement were not announced, but representatives from both parties said they believe the deal will benefit digital watermarking in general. "The advertising industry's need for ad placement verification is greater today than ever before, and record
companies and music publishers are very concerned about unauthorized use of copyrighted material on the Internet. We believe that, by working together with Lucent, we can provide better, low-cost solutions for these growing needs," said David Leibowitz, ARIS Technologies' vice chairman.

Lucent's MediaTraX is a video insertion technology that embeds information into both analog and digital broadcast and cable systems, without affecting the quality of the images. One of its primary uses is for advertisement tracking. ARIS's MediaCode and MusiCode technologies, on the other hand, embed information into audio tracks, which can then be perceived in a variety of formats, including CD, DVD and audio cassette, as well as radio, television, cable, satellite and Internet transmissions. Like MediaTraX, these products do not alter the quality of the audio signals.

ARIS's MusiCode technology was recently selected by SESAC, a performing rights organization, to identify and track musical performances on the Internet [see 1.16.98 SESAC Backs ARIS' MusiCode for Tracking Music]. Additionally, ARIS has announced that Nordic Entertainment Worldwide has also adopted MusiCode for songs sold on its
Downloadable Music Site. Nordic has been making digitally downloadable music available since early 1997, and the company continues to expand its catalog. The company recently took part in a free public trial of Digital Equipment's microcommerce system [see 1.22.98 Music Ventures Line Up for Digital's Microcommerce System].
