<< There's a quiet war raging between Canada's major banks and the Royal Canadian Mint, and it creates a spelling problem. It's built around a surplus of one-dollar coins, which could make it the loonie war. Nobody wants them, so that could make it the loony war.

To give the problem proper size, Canada's five big banks are holding between them a surplus of $75 million in loonies. The way the system works, the coins are manufactured in Winnipeg and shipped to distribution centres across the country where banks buy them at face value. It's a service to customers, and there's no profit for the banks.

That many loonies weigh 524 tonnes. Mint spokeswoman Diane Plouff-Reardon had the experts work it out.
