By the time the Alpha comes out, a dual PPro will be cheaper. Currently the dual PPro is the best buy in PC computing Mip wise. If is cheaper than the 500mhz alpha and runs x86 complied software faster than the alhpa emulator at 500 mhz. that is the secret, x86 compiled software. You can currently get a dual PPro for under $3700. As DEC releases the new alpha, INTC pushes the price hierachy of the chips down a notch, preserving the price/performance advantage. The emulator incurs too much overhead for the alpha sub 650mhz chip to outperform the dual PPRo 200 on a price/performance level, and there are not many native alpha complied NT apps.
