Taipei, June 10, 1999 (CENS)--Formosa Plastics Group, Taiwan's largest
conglomerate for plastics products, has begun talks with Daewoo Motor
Co. of South Korea for the possibility of jointly developing electric
cars, FPG chairman Y.C. Wang said on Thursday. The FPG recently
announced plans to invest US$2 billion to build a plant for
manufacturing electric cars and auto parts. Mass production is likely
to begin in 2006 with an annual capacity of 500,000 electric cars,
officials of the group said earlier.

The group will also hold talks with other automakers from South Korea
and the U.S. for possible partners to manufacture electric-cars, Wang
said. However he declined to disclose names of these companies. The
FPG had originally planned to team up with Renault SA of France, but
talks with the French automaker have slowed down after Renault reached
an agreement in April with Nissan Motor of Japan to take up a stake in
the Japanese company. There are other better partners available, Wang
told reporters. Meanwhile, Nan Ya Plastics Corp., a core unit of the
FPG, is building a US$10 million plant in northern Taiwan to produce
lithium and nickel-zinc batteries for notebook PCs and mobile phones.

Nan Ya had secured the battery-manufacturing technology from Shin-Kobe
Electric Co. of Japan, a unit of Hitachi, said Wu Chia-chao, the
company's spokesman. Wu said the plant, located in Taipei County,
will begin mass production at the end of this year with a monthly
capacity of one million units. Nan Ya will also engage in
manufacturing Ni-MH (nickel hydrogen) batteries for electric cars in
the future.
