Starbucks Expecting to Add 500 North American Stores

Starbucks Corp., is in talks with the Kraft foods unit of Philip Morris Cos. to distribute its Tazo tea line to supermarkets, and expects to add about 500 coffeehouses in North America this year, President Orin Smith said.

Kraft currently distributes Starbucks Zcoffee beans to grocers, mainly in the western and midwestern United States. Starbucks is now focusing on the eastern United States, and expects to have its beans on grocers' shelves throughout the United States by the middle of next year, Smith said.

Smith, speaking at an investor conference in Minneapolis sponsored by the U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray, said Starbucks also plans to expand its coffeehouses overseas to about 500 in the Asia-Pacific region and 500 in Europe by 2003. Starbucks currently has a total of about 200 coffeehouses in Asia-Pacific and Europe.
