No need for panic on earth passing through a comet's debris trail

A comet debris trail is just a collection of particles (mostly
micrometeoroids) that the sun melted off from the comet's icy core.

The earth passes through several comet debris clouds each year. The
most significant result of them are a pretty meteor showers. Here's
a quick rundown of the major showers:
---------+-------------
January..|.Quadrantids
April....|.Lyrids
May......|.Aquarids
July.....|.Aquarids
October..|.Orionids
November.|.Leonids
December.|.Geminids
---------+--------------

The particles are way too small to reach the ground, so we have
nothing to worry about down here. In space, however, satellites
could be seriously damaged by an unlucky chance encounter with a
speedy charged particle.

If we are lucky, we will have a great meteor shower display in
November 1999 without any satellites getting hit. You would need
something really weird to happen for this to be the "King of terror
from the sky"
