She always qualified her food with the nutritional reasons for eating it... I avoided that for the most part, but my father fancied himself something of an armchair gourmand, and was always bringing home disgusting things and trying to make us kids eat them, with the admonition that it was a delicacy somewhere on the face of the earth. In this category were things like kidneys and snails and endives and artichoke leaves, all basically unacceptable fare for someone under the age of ten.
