Yeah but the problem is things have been "enhanced" over the last 200 years now haven't they? Take a look at the taxes the coastal states (generally liberal) vs. say, Alabama. Now, for things to be truly fair, I want my money to stay right where it is. I don't know if anybody remembers but the SF Loma Prieta earthquake and Hurricane Hugo happened within months of each other. THere was a huge outcry from the Hugo victims that Fema gave "preference" to SF. For the states-rights argument to hold water, I would expect California to get dibs on everything, next NY, all the coasts, etc. and at the bottom of the line the bible belt because they don't add much to the GNP. And as far as federal highways/transportation, I think we should take the federal $$ we spend for southern states and redirect it to building a new NYC subway, since its NY money anyway, same in California - forget building highways in Nevada, nobody goes there, no value add - what we need is a bullett-train between Seattle and SF.

Of course when you take it to this extreme anyone can see this won't work.... I'm not sure if it ever would have worked but certainly the notion of a federal income tax violates the "states-rights" idealogue.
