Rex and Thread members,

I had a very enjoyable experience this week with my PDA.

Prior to the trip I downloaded a bunch of interesting web pages which I read off-line on the plane trip. Everyone sitting in a seat in plain view of my LCD screen came over to ask what type of PC this was. I could have sold a dozen right on the spot. No problem.

Then I downloaded Microsoft Pocket Streets and "excised" a map of Washington, DC. The program gives you a detailed street map which is designed for use with a GPS system. I was able to find my hotel with a search function in the program. I also highlighted all the subway stops and museums I was interested in visiting. That way the map is stippled with only the key sites I predetermined. I showed this program to some colleagues at the convention and they were blown away. The map I stored on a CF card and it took up 1 MB of space. With each successive trip I make I plan to add city maps for future reference with annotations of sites to see, good restaurants and hotels, etc... Call me a techno-geek if you will, but it is an awesome program.

Finally, I downloaded a language translation program. I just cut-and-paste words out of web pages into the program and an automatic translation comes up along with common idiomatic expressions using the search word. This is really cool and makes reading foreign articles much more enjoyable.

I was sad that my MP3 player is mono. I miss not having that function. It is the "killer app" for those with PDA's.
