Glimpses of Dasara '98 !!!

DASARA : Origin and Background

According to ritual digests and traditional mythologies of the early puranas there are two festivals that are called "navaratri". The first one comes during the spring equinox, in the bright half of the lunar month of Chaitra (March-April) and lasts from the first to the ninth day. This is generally a planting festival and in many parts of India marks the beginning of the lunar year. The second navaratri comes at the inauspicious period of dakshinayana, coincides with the autumn equinox, and the commemorates the killing of an evil mythical being called Mahishasura or buffalo demon by the fiery warrior goddess Durga, the "inaccessible".

This autumnal navaratri starts from the first day of the bright half of the lunar month of Ashwina or Ashvayuja (October-November) and ends on the ninth day. In many regions, a tenth day called Vijaya-Dashami is added making it a ten-day festival generally known as Dasara, from Sanskrit words dasha or ten and ahara or days.
