OT** EarthQuake storys-
I was in Santa Cruz for the Loma Prieta. Had to wipe myself twice<g>

Do you remember the one in Morgan Hill about 12-15 years ago? I was building a huge commercial job in Watsonville. We were doing work in a 6 story elevator shaft that day. As we worked our way up the shaft we got more and more nervous from the height so of course we were cracking more and more jokes. One of the jokes was that this would be the day "the Big One" would hit.

Well, it wasn't the big'un, BUT it was a 6.4-6.6. It was a roller type. It hit as we were on tippy-toes on a plank and two stepladders.
All kinds of rebar and hydraulics for the elevator WAYYY down below us.

We were off that ladder and running like hell. Big bundles of 2x6, 2x4s, and 2in sprinkler pipes (you know how much those weigh!) were bouncing around the floor and as we tried to run between some unfinished walls, the joists actually shimmied and swayed enough to hit ME. I didn't run into it, it ran into me!

We got to the stairs (They weren't nailed down yet) and they were bouncing around about a foot off the ground.

Damn thing lasted for over a minute. As you know, a minute seemed like a hour. I was genuinely scared. I thought maybe the whole place was gonna come down on us. (the framing wasn't completed yet)

Took the rest of the day off and drank COPIOUS amounts of alchohol.

PS-Getting all kinds of little tremors here today. It's "earthquake weather" too. About 90 degrees.
