The real turning point was the following summer, in Kursk, 1943.

It's been said by some Germans that "after Stalingrad, we weren't sure we could still win. After Kursk, we knew we had lost."

Your other points about the Russian casualties are well-taken.

On the other hand, did you know that it came out in 1993 that the USSR was about to attack Germany in 1941, just before they were attacked themselves? It's very difficult for me to think of the Soviet leadership as "innocent" in that tragedy we call "WW2."
