This entire section of the river is ridiculously dangerous-looking and has only been run by deranged experts.

That about sums it up. If you know what you can handle and stay reasonably within your limits, there's nothing to be afraid of. Otherwise, well, it's like anything else, you can get into trouble.

The second stretch sounds about my speed, though it's a much bigger river than anything we have here, and would require different skills. Most of our rivers would be called creeks there; it's a different obsession. Big waves can be fun too, though, and it's nice not to be constantly dodging rocks.

Some of the Himalayan rivers are just plain insane; it amazes me that anybody even thinks of running them. But they do. I'm glad that somebody does, but it isn't going to be me. Unless maybe....

No. I'm too old for that stuff. I wonder how I'll feel when my son starts in on it, as it seems certain that he will.
