Well I guess you have to look to the medical profession for this, because they have wrestled with the issue a lot.... for a while anyone with a heartbeat was considered "alive" and therefore required life support. Then a notion of a soul was introduced meaning a brain dead person, even with a beating heart is not a person. I don't know about the living brain and no heartbeat case. I am one who believes brain dead people are not alive even if they can be maintained with life support.

The common thread for life along with being deemed "alive" is that they can survive, with life support. So say you have a person with a living brain but no heartbeat, and he is on life support and dies (his brain dies), then he is no longer alive.

Expanding this to the fetus - which is I think where you are going with this, if you have a fetus with a living brain (which doesn't occur until mid pregnancy apparently so by that logic early term abortions are not murder), then for it to be alive it would need to be a sustainable life with life support. Almost no aborted fetuses fit this categorization except maybe the PBAs that upset you guys so much. Thats why I can lean a little towards outlawing PBAs, because it is a sustainable life with life support which is what we apply to adults. But the midterm abortions, 5 mos or so, no way, there isn't a functioning brain there and they can't be kept alive with life support so case closed for me.
