Dear Friend of Borders.com:

The summer books on my shelf are easy to spot. They wear
the ravages of their reading season like a loud Hawaiian shirt;
the covers are worn and the pages dog-eared and brittle from
the sun. Some of them seem to have swelled to twice their
original size from the mix of ocean air, humidity and suntan
lotion. The summer is permanently tattooed on each book,
the condition of which, come to think of it, serves as a nice
little metaphor for the season -- a little less buttoned up, a
little more free and easy. They're my relaxed-fit books.

For any reader, books are a big part of the summer package,
but understanding that the season is as much an attitude as
it is a measure of time, Borders.com has plenty of summer to
go around. Here's a taste:

OUR NEW SUMMER BOUTIQUE -- Visit our collection of all
things summer, from BBQ books to tomato growing handbooks
to camping and hiking guides to Dick Dale surf music -- and
a whole lot of other funky summer stuff in between. Check out
the Tiki Hut, my favorite collection in the boutique, for all of
your ukulele music and Polynesian party needs.

50% OFF NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLERS -- We've said
it before, but it bears repeating -- all of the big selling
titles on your summer reading list -- books like "Hannibal" by
Thomas Harris, "White Oleander" by Janet Fitch, and "Bella
Tuscany" by Frances Mayes -- are 50-percent off as long as they
stay on the Times' list. And you can pre-order the hot titles
about to be released at 50-percent off too! Get 'em while
they're hot -- and cheap.

OUR BELLA TUSCANY CONTEST -- Speaking of "Bella Tuscany,"
we've just announced a fun new writing contest to be judged by
author Frances Mayes herself. Write about why you love Italy --
be it the country, the food, or the films -- and you could win a
gift basket of gourmet Italian delicacies, delivered to your door
once a month for three months. Nine runners-up will win fun Italian
prizes too, plus we'll print your essay on our site. Enter now to
win a taste of la dolce vita.

OUR GRRRL TALK COLUMN -- Take a few minutes to read our
latest literary addition to the site, Grrrl Talk, a weekly
women's studies column written by our lead book editor, Jessica
Jernigan. (You may remember her sharp interview with Bill Murray
from the last newsletter.) The column is thoughtful, wry, and a
great example of the type of independent thinking that sets
Borders.com apart from all of the other online bookstores. Male
or female, you'll want to bookmark it and check back every week --
or email it to a friend.

AUSTIN POWERS STUFF -- The Austin Powers craze is
astounding in its breadth, extending from the MTV crowd to
Wall Street. I'll spare you another foray into shagadelia but
will point out our special Austin Powers section, with links to
the hot new "Spy Who Shagged Me" soundtrack, books, the
original Austin Powers video, and more.

OPRAH'S LATEST PICK, "MOTHER OF PEARL" -- Mighty Oprah has
chosen and you can pick up her latest bookclub selection, "Mother of
Pearl" by Melinda Haynes, at 40-percent off. Publisher's Weekly says
the book is a "wise, luminous novel" with "courageous storytelling,
and compassion." And it has a beautiful cover to boot.
