Let's get a grip here, folks. What it is not is a banner ad. It's a bit of a stretch to say that a a few characters on an otherwise unused portion of the page is being "bombarded with other forms of solicitation". The download time for the code on even a slow 28.8kbs analog connection is maybe 5/100 of a second. Admittedly, it was a bit obtrusive before the color was changed (an old programmers technique for getting users to accept the desired change <g>).

Is there really any harm being done here? It seems to me that the spirit of Brad's earlier comments is being upheld. There is some anxiety towards the notion that this is a prelude to invasion. Don't they deserve the benefit of the doubt, especially from the "grandfathered" users?
