I grew up in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the District where we argued as children about whether or not we would have been Blue or Gray during the Civil War. Guess where I stood? The neighborhood also integrated early, and the high- school I attended had to lose blacks when busing came to Prince George's County. Now, Prince George's County is the Black Westchester, as it were, and tensions that used to be racial are emerging between the middle- class blacks and poor blacks, and are turning out to have more to do with class. As you know, one of my brothers has an African- American wife, and I now have two nieces and a nephew of mixed- race living in the county. Anyway, we in the nearer District suburbs of Maryland, and in the Baltimore area, rarely think of ourselves as southern...Coral Gables is the Gold Coast, so I imagine that it is hard to dislike, except possibly for ostentation (judging from a couple of people I have known who lived there)...No, I am not going to the NY beaches (although I would like to nose around Long Island sometime). I am going to drive, stop at the Jersey shore, and then take the Cape May- Lewes ferry to the Delmarva peninsula, and hang for awhile in Ocean City, Maryland...P.S.--- I was delayed by messaging with a brother:-) |
