Someone would have had to put the last nail in the Sequent OEM coffin so it might as well be me. I'm also putting 3/4 of a nail in the Sun OEM coffin...

I attended the Sequent "Extreme Launch Event" for the NUMA-Q today. To make a not long story shorter... I had a chat with Casey Powell, Sequent CEO who introduced me to two attendees, Bruce Bergman Brocade CEO and Paul Bonderson Brocade VP of Engineering. They were there as "interested listeners" since it's not official yet. But that's all that's left... making it public.

NUMA-Q currently supports FC-AL and later in the year will support Class 2/3 switching. This is the Sequent company line. One need only fill in the blanks. Which was easy for me to do as the blanks were standing only a few feet away.

I asked the Brocade guys about Sun and they said many of Brocade's employees come from Sun, Andy Bechtolsheim has "put a lot of money" into Brocade etc. (I guess this will rule out Cisco as an OEM too) They seemed confident about Sun. The VP said they do have switches "in the field." They know their OEMs and consequently feel no rush to announce any deals. They will be focusing on FC Class 2/3 switches only. They are currently using ASICs from HP and Vitesse but I caught something about a new ASIC they are developing (my nontechie limitations kicked in here).

I asked Casey and the Brocade guys about Ancor and got rather uncomfortable nonresponses. They didn't want to talk about Ancor.

On the positive side... According to these guys, FC is going to be big. Sequent thinks so, Brocade obviously thinks so, Andy Bechtolsheim "Mr. GE" apparently thinks so. I still assume that when FC takes off Ancor will get a good piece of it. This may turn out to be the wrong assumption. On the other hand, maybe I'll be able to get rid of the cloud I'm currently living under <g>

PS. I've now talked to the Emulex CEO, Ancor CEO, Sequent CEO, Brocade CEO all within the last month. Kind of amazing that a nobody like me has been able to do that... sure hasn't helped my portfolio <g>
