P&G Far East to sell products direct to retailers

TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Procter & Gamble Far East Inc. will bypass
wholesalers and sell directly to retailers from October. The Japanese unit
of the major U.S. daily goods maker (PG: news, msgs) currently delivers
products to retailers through about 60 wholesalers. The move is aimed at
reducing retail prices and expanding sales by skipping wholesalers. P&G's
decision was prompted by the push by Costco Companies Inc.(COST:
news, msgs), a leading U.S. warehouse club which began operating in
Japan earlier this year, to deal directly with manufacturers. The attempt
could mark a breakthrough in the complicated Japanese distribution
system, analysts said.
