G-8 LIKELY TO ORGANIZE Y2K MEETING Yomiuri Shimbun (Japan) The Group of Eight major powers are expected to agree at their forthcoming summit in Cologne, Germany, to hold a special meeting of experts to discuss issues relating to the year 2000 computer glitch, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned Wednesday. The agreement is likely to be included in a declaration to be adopted by the G-8 on Sunday. The summit kicks off Friday. The meeting would take place in September in Berlin, and would examine each country's plans for dealing with the so-called Y2K computer glitch in terms of government, energy and telecommunications issues ... Plans that need to be worked out specifically include securing takeoff sites for aircraft, maintaining alternative routes for telecommunications networks, and repairing electricity and petroleum supply systems. The plans have to be finalized to prepare for possible malfunctions in air-traffic control systems and international telecommunications.
