math is an accepted shortened form of mathematics. Random House Webster's College Dictionary.

Arithmetic is a part of mathematics. When you do arithmetic you are also doing mathematics.

So telling someone to do their math is perfectly correct English.

Stylistically you may not like it, but it is certainly not an "error" in English, which is what this thread is titled.
