The airport of the future? From the June 14 Aviation Week and Space Technology:

"Airport planners expect the coming decade to bring wider use of 'smart-card' passenger identification technology. The goal is to give passengers a wallet-sized card that carries their essential identification and trip itinerary information on it so they can move 'seamlessly' through an airport by checking themselves in for flights and clearing immigration and customs at self-service kiosks rather than standing in lines at counters. Biometric verification with handprints or fingerprints is the commonly conceived method of verifying identifies.

'''The idea would be for passengers to check in just once and the system would keep track of them as they continued their journey,' [an industry spokesman] said. 'The airports gain because they get increased throughput. Smart cards would delay their need for expansion' of terminal facilities. . . ."
