Monaco - Re: "...once they get this Coppermine out, is it going to be a "hot" new product that everyone is waiting for? and if so why is everybody freaking out over a 2 month delay."

AMD is about ready (so they say) to launch their K7 and AMD thinks it is faster than Intel's current Pentium /// and Pentium /// Xeon.

If that is so, the Coppermine would allow Intel to have a CPU that is faster than the K7 - to maintain Intel's leadership position.

With the Coppermine delayed, AMD has a wide open field for 4 or 5 months to establish the K7 as the highest performance x86 CPU and to get customers to adopt it. That could erode Intel's market share and provide pricing pressure at the high end which, up till now, had been all Intel.

Whether AMD can pull this off is another matter - they don't exactly have an unblemished record for execution in new product launches.

That's a real threat to Intel's hegemony in this business and the folks that ran for cover today don't like risks.
