Nobody is trying to strip away the right to freely practice religion. They're not talking about closing down churches. It has more to do with the common human reaction to need to do something, anything in response. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent madness in all cases. There's little to no evidence to support that exhibiting religious icons in public spaces would prevent such an occurrence, and even less to support exhibiting this particular icon over a statue of Buddha, or of Vishnu. In the Los Angeles county school system there are over 120 separate languages spoken by students, and who knows how many different religions. All vie for the title of the 'one true' religion. Practice your religion in your church, leave the schools for learning.
