[QoS dependent broadband applications]

hi bill,

>>Now, if they were innovative, AOL could provide end-to-end support for ATM over ADSL, opening up a wide range of QoS dependent broadband applications.<<

aol may not get there real quick, but their (wannabe) competition certainly sees the relevance.. don't know if you consider msft innovative, but end-to-end support for ATM over ADSL sure looks like their game plan... a rather interesting read (50 page word doc) on why they think this is important .. and how msft is likely to make a lot of $ along the way... a little like those "where's waldo " challenges : lets see msft makes $ on: Microsoft Windows 2000 for the servers; Microsoft Windows 2000 on those home gateways; voip on Microsoft NetMeeting; Microsoft Proxy Server; on WebTV®;MSN Internet Access etc etc )

"DSL Architecture
The Microsoft End-to-End Architecture for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

DRAFT: April 28, 1999"
microsoft.com

fwiw note the example of the "SVC-aware DSLAM technology" they like

btw sounds like msft is now trialing end-to-end support for ATM over ADSL...
"MSN Internet Access Begins Digital Subscriber Line Trials"
microsoft.com

thought the comment "In addition, trial customers will have access to broadband offerings available on the Internet, such as streaming video, that are only accessible when using DSL technology." kinda pointed to qos (in light of such discussion in the paper)
