Just opened our little weekly paper and another parent is asking the district to pull a book from its library shelves. The school reviewed it and refused;; now the mother is appealing the decision- with the support of the Christian Coalition, who are ready to take it further.

The book is Tiger Flowers by Patricia Quinlan, (who wrote the sweet Baby's Feet and Baby's Hands)and is about a child's losing her uncle to AIDS, aFter his partner died of it.

THis mother and daughter were planting a garden and her daughter brought the book home and started reading it aloud to her mother, thinking it was about flowers.
(THis made me laugh- sorry- can't you just picture it though???)

THe author says while it was a gay relationship, the book was about grieving and that the disease is part of today's life.

THe mother said it could be restricted to the counselor's office, but shouldn't be available generally, as some parents weren't ready to discuss this with their elementary aged children.
