Web, not weird at all, IBM has been enamored with tunneling effects for years. In the early 80' they poured close to $300 MM into Josephson Junctions (another tunneling effect between two superconductors separated by about 20 to 100 angstroms of insulator, or 4 to 25 atoms thick layer) based electronic devices. The spin flip tunneling effect is a new twist, but I can see the rational progression, I am not sure yet how these spin states will withstand thermal fluctuations, but they'll find a way <g>.
