We had a good one here at University of Hawaii. A student sued an assistant professor (of religion) and UH and our professors' Union for sexual harassment in federal court. The professor countersued for libel and abuse of process, the union got acquitted (having spent $175,000) and UH paid (her lawyer) $300,000 (we're so broke we can't afford to offer classes students need to graduate). The university was required by contract to pay the professor's defense costs. It refused. The union sued the university and won. The university hired the union's lawyer ($110 an hour -- but very, very good.) She accused the professor of rape and stuff in class (on days there were no classes -- really sloppy prosecution.) Her ex-husband testified against her. Polygraphs were stipulated but not introduced all around. Our guy told the truth. She lied. The jury (all women) ruled on every count for the professor. And awarded $350,000 to the professor's countersuit (his private lawyer). The girl was judgment proof. She is an all-A student enrolled in a fine law school. The professor (who had to countersue to save his reputation) spent several years in agony and criticised by UH officials, faculty and students. (Some feminist professors got elected to the union board to interfere with the defense). He has published very little. He is a Hindu ex-marine. He will not get tenure or promotion. His marriage and family is destroyed. Teaching is a very hazardous occupation.
