V,

I'm pretty sure most of the vocal anti-ad folks are among SI's (and the Dryers') most vehement supporters. I'm also pretty sure they're being vocal precisely because they do care so much about SI and do appreciate how good it is, especially now that there are several other sites with which to compare it.

I would agree with you that Brad is probably working on some sort of option for members to disable the ads. My guess is if he defaulted that option to "enable", only about an eighth of the members at most would take the time to change it. The rest probably won't care, won't know they have such an option, or just don't quite get around to doing anything about it. I'd probably leave it enabled just for curiosity and then disable it if I thought certain ads were becoming too obtrusive. Considering the vast number of page views are by non-members, I can't see too much downside implementing such an option.

Only if ads starting appearing within posts would I really start to worry.

- Jeff
