Japan was making cheaper, more fuel efficient cars. From 1972 on, the average consumer could pay very little for a car, let alone to maintain it. As a result, the cheap Japanese imports made up ground rapidly.

Yeah, price got their foot in the door. But they came on gangbusters in the quality arena, and they are still the leaders. Maybe because Detroit underestimated the effect quality and price would have on consumers, and overestimated the effect of styling.

Funny thing happened. I just wrote a longer reply to McDroogies, but as I tried to post my Mac crashed...
