Well Mr. Hamilton, I've been using Linux for over six years and you have been caught by one of the most common problems in installing Linux. IMHO Xfree86 is tedious, I always use AcceleratedX from Xinside as my Xserver. It is far simpler to install and config than XFreee86, but it costs about 90 bucks.
