I really wanted to stay out of this fray—but I'll add my two cents, which should probably be steeply discounted for inflation:

1. I really don't mind the blurb—I read posts and the thing in the corner doesn't hamper my reading of posts a single bit. (pro)

2. I also understand the concerns of my many friends who are completely opposed to it. One billboard leads to another, and pretty soon you have 'Burma Shave'. (con)

3. In order to continue providing quality service, SI must make money. (pro)

4. Quality service *did* mean at one time, that the members wouldn't suffer ads—those would be for the non-paying folks—or at least, members would have the option. (con)

Whilst I agree that SI must "do what it needs to do", there were a couple tactical misfires:

1. Many changes were suggested at the 'New SI' thread: #Subject-27464 Many of those were excellent and beneficial, yet the first and only change implemented is the ad. Would have been better to put out the 'sugar' first.

2. There still hasn't been substantial response from management despite this issue which has been burning out of control for days.

All that said, SI has been wonderful to me and I support them. My friends who have concerns about this new event have been equally wonderful, and I support them, too.
