Dell is, sooner or later, doomed to meet the same fate as everyone else who puts themselves 100% at the mercy of MSFT. MSFT is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, they are a monopoly and monopolies tend to generate nice volumes <g>, but tend to drag with them a lot of baggage from the past and hence are slow to change.

In addition, Microsoft is and has always been a trailing-edge software developer. Their own R&D work has yielded nothing of interest over the years, and all their advances have come through acquisition or theft of ideas, as so many have pointed out. The current comedy with the Windows $98 "second edition of nothing" and Office $2000 demonstrates this, and Windows $2000 will continue to do so.

In the end Dell will be left with a shrinking piece of the retro pie as the world's computing technology infrastructure changes and Microsoft is left behind, with MD & co. chained to it.

Regards,
