There is something extremely screwy about SI that is far more complex than page size or server speed.
Sometimes it can take 30 seconds to start loading a post. Sometimes it will load a little and then pause for 15 seconds.

This happens to me regardless of what ISP I use or what time of day, and it happens *only* on SI. The fact that some people dont have any problems with SI implies that it is something in how SI connects to the network or how it routes. Beyond me really.

This does point out an issue yet again that I have always wondered about @home. I have a 48k modem link and with NetMedic I can tell that very often even over such a skinny pipe the "last mile" is *not* the primary limiter. Faster connnections with all else equal would do me little good. The primary culprit I suspect is traffic within the ISP itself, though it could also be the "internet" as the source. I actually have good reason to doubt that the server of the web site is the cause despite the fact that is what people blame the most.
