Why Intel is SCARED of the K7
by: ICEngineer (35/M/AZ) 41841 of 41876
I have a family member who works in the EDA industry. He came across some very interesting info on the K7. It seems that Intel was able to obtain a sample of the K7 which they took no time in trying to reverse engineer. What they found practically made them pee their pants. The K7 core is completely synthesized and the mask sets generated via place and route. For those who understand IC design, this means several things. First AMD will be able to generate spin-offs and modifications at will and with a development time far less than Intel can (read two months vs six or more months for Intel). Second these improvements can be done with only a few designers versus Intel's groups whose size I have been told runs around 20+ engineers. Intel does not have the capability to synthesis complete cores. They do it in a piece meal fashion doing the top core by hand. The arrogance of Intel has finally bit them in the ass as they currently use mostly their own software for layout and are behind the state of the art of synthesis tools. For those of us who own AMD, this is excellent news as AMD most certainly has a chance to compete with Intel. I believe my source is reliable.
