Michael,

I never thought of myself as a Quixote. Perhaps if you had said "you wax quixotic on DSL or Emerging Technologies I might fall under those categories.

Of course finding DSL and Amati in 1995 is directly proportional to my passion for finding Emerging Technologies prior to the World having a clue of their existence.

While attending NETWORK + INTEROP in Vegas last month, I talked to a TI DSL Rep who told me TI has an ADSL Full Rate Spitterless product also.

I have also read a number of articles on Voice over DSL, one of best was by Carol Wilson, a favorite DSL writer of mine.

Voice over DSL is just what the CLEC's need. Give-em Free High-Speed Data and make the profit on Voice.

I too stay abreast of John Cioffi's escapades, his latest papers are

"DMT VDSL needs ONLY a 12-bit ADC"
ftp://ftp.t1.org/pub/t1e1/e1.4/dir99/9e142723.pdf

"VDSL Global Performance Requirement Verification"
ftp://ftp.t1.org/pub/t1e1/e1.4/dir99/9e142732.pdf

Knowing his Italian heritage, it's quite fitting that they are now calling him the Godfather of DSL.

John Cioffi - Board Member
Cioffi is known in the industry as the godfather of DSL. He founded Amati Communications Corp. in 1991, and served as the chief technology officer until Texas Instruments purchased Amati in 1998. Through Cioffi's leadership, DMT technology is now the foundation of DSL
products. Amati delivered the first DMT modems into the market in 1993, and licensed the technology to all of the major DSL vendors in the market including Alcatel, Motorola, TI, ADI, Pairgain, NEC, 3Com, Nortel, and ECI. Cioffi worked as a modem designer at Bell Laboratories from 1978-1984, and as a disk read-channel researcher at IBM from 1984-1986.
He has been on the faculty of Stanford since 1986, where he is now a tenured associate professor. Cioffi received a BSEE in 1978 from Illinois (Champaign) and a PhDEE degree in 1984 from Stanford. Cioffi's particular expertise lies in the area of high-performance digital transmission and storage systems where he has over 100 publications, and 30 patents. Cioffi is also a board member of C-Cube, Charter Venture Capital, and the National Research Council.
