You are believing fairy tales about the inferior technologies winning because of marketing. What occurs is that two technologies which may be better or worse are too close to be decided by technology alone. Then the next order of consideration, marketing, wins the day. If two technologies are close what does it matter to the public which wins?

DSL is not a technological competitor of cable any more than telegraph was for telephone. DSL won't last more than 5 years because cable has economies of cost scale potentially way beyond what is possible for DSL. DSL is a sunset technology. It is an interim solution whose only impact on Att is to slow short term profitability and even that may not be the case.

You still don't have it right. DSL and cable are not competing for critical mass. Critical mass comes from competing, but these two technologies are only competing in an abstract sense. The companies behind them are not competing. They're in different markets. Do you hear, FCC? In spite of clown reports about DSL throughput please tell me who would take DSL over cable if they had both available? Gotcha, the ad brainwashed AOL public herd. But not for long.

There is a great benefit for Att from the advent of DSL because Att then would have the time to swallow all that they have bitten. If Att was to be dominant to the degree of 60% of the market, they might find that they continue to incur unavoidable cost beyond what they have projected. That means much of the country does not get served with good quality cable access. The result is that Att shoots itself in the foot by giving people an incentive to try the alternative technology Do I have to remind you of the Fremont revolt? People will wait for a very long time if they believe what they're waiting for is extremely good. Is Att working on extremely good or are they working on short term profitability? So DSL is a blessing in disguise unless Att doesn't believe in their own purchase of TCI or in cable as the superior technology. If they thought that, then why would they mortgage the company to buy UMG?
