'Star Wars' Goes Digital (longer article)

One could finally realize how vibrant the digitally-projected colors were, compared to the somewhat washed-out colors on film. The contrast was obviously much sharper in digital, and every area of the screen could be perceived clearly, the dark spots just as well as the brightly-lit ones. Because of this, details previously unnoticed could now be appreciated to their fullest. Even pitted against a film print of the best quality - and a brand new one at that - the digital incarnation of Episode I was clearly the victor. This was made possible by the technology developed at Texas Instruments, in which the projector has its light bounced off three Digital Micromirror Device[tm] units. Each of the sealed units is about the size of a tea bag, and contains 1,300,000 tiny mirrors that can be switched on and off to create the desired picture on screen.

Episode I, digital edition, opens today, June 18, in four theaters: the AMC Burbank 14 and Pacific's Winnetka Theater in the Los Angeles area, and Loews' Route 4 Paramus in the New York area and at Loews' Meadows 6 in Secaucus, New Jersey. The movie will run in digital for four weeks.
