Me Inc,
Covad is a service provider of DSL; that is, they obtain collocations in ILEC central offices and install DSL for customers. Their DSL competitors are the Bell Companies (ILECs), Rhythms, Northpoint, and a whole bunch of mom-and-pop DSL providers. And, further down the road, AT&T, WorldCom, AOL, and the cable companies will be competitors for the last mile. Pairgain is an equipment manufacturer. They sell the equipment that companies like Covad use (although I'm not sure which equipment Covad currently buys). Other DSL equipment manufacturers are Cisco, Coppermountain, Alcatel, Tut Systems, et al. Hope that helps.
