The current state of the art is exemplified by the Lucent 5ESS which has achieved the coveted ranking of six nines for reliablity in the field. I.e. network uptime of 99.9999% of the time. In other words, downtime = <10 sec./year/switch.

But it ain't packets we're tawkin' here, so this stuff will soon be history......
